Hey folks, given the shit show with Discord, another community I’m part of on Discord is wondering whether to move to Matrix. Was wondering if there’s an unadvertised Matrix server that someone at Fedecan is already hosting?

After some research and discussion, we don’t have any immediate plans to set up a Matrix instance by Fedecan. Our main concern is that we don’t have the capacity to moderate private chats / channels. If we were to set up the instance for public use only, it might not be useful enough to justify the resource usage and admin time to keep it going.
We are open to revisiting this again in the future. If anyone has more thoughts on why we should / shouldn’t set up an instance, feel free to let us know, and we will copy them into our notes for the next time we look into this. :)

Thanks for taking the time to do a feasibility study. I’m hopeful to see some type of chat solution in the future.
Matrix does seem like it would require its own dedicated mod team, but iirc there is an automod to help with the really obvious violations.
Nowhere yet. Still on Discord since Discord backpedaled on their ID bullshit. We’ll have to reexamine again at some point. It seems there may be some other alternatives to look into like Stoat or Fluxer.
BTW I’m not at all a fan of the Discord format but it’s not my decision to use that format.
Seconding the desire for some Canadian discord alts
I’m working through self-hosting a public server and will post it here when I can get it through my dummy brain.
I hate to say it but the best way to convince the team to create a Discord alt is to donate and speak up that people here want a Canadian Discord alternative

Ever since I joined lemmy.ca, I tried to find a Canadian matrix server. Lots of Mastodon servers but could not find a matrix one.
