Anyone have a good resource on how to DeDRM kfx Kindle books? For Linux desktops? Looks like the latest I could find required running a Windows only keygen to work (if it works). Trying to see if I can’t get something to work on Linux with Calibre before just downloading the books from the high seas.

As others have said it’s much easier to just go to Anna’s and grab an open copy. You can also check your library’s website (it will have DRM but is easier to remove).

I know this is the piracy community but when it comes to books I always check the author’s personal website first. Sometimes they sell copies with no/simple DRM and the money goes to them.

Eh, I wouldn’t bother putting in the effort to de-DRM kindle books and just go straight to the high seas for a proper open copy.

Yeah, I have that and it was great. However, after they disabled the ability to download, Amazon introduced a new file type, .kfx instead of .amz or whatever. I haven’t got DeDRM to work on those at all, and it looks like you need Windows with some tools to break it.

I’ve got it working on Linux as recently as about 6 months ago. I installed an older version of kindle viewer via wine. Not sure which version right now at the top of my head, but it worked great for me.

The latest DeDRM uses a key from the installed version of the Kindle program, which is for Windows. I think you can use a key from the Android or Amazon tablet versions too, but I’ve never been able to get it to accept those keys

        Ah, thats annoying.

Yeah I’d probably just grab a clean version somewhere myself. Or if its not available, an extremely short-lived VM just to get that key going.

You can use Calibre + DeDRM and some jiggery pokery with Windows version of Kindle, but to be honest, that’s just really fucking annoying and it’s just easier to sail the high seas and get already open version of your book.

Calibre + DeDRM should be able to remove the DRM. I haven’t needed this for some time now, so I don’t know if things have changed.

The main problem is getting the book files. You cannot transfer them from Kindle (unless maybe if it’s jailbroken), Amazon removed the possibility to download them from their page, and there is no Linux version of the Kindle app. You need to use a specific old version of the Kindle app to download the books, so that it downloads files with older DRM. Also, some newer books (books released within the last year or two, or so) might have a DRM that cannot be broken.

I think the version of Kindle app you need to use is 2.4. You can download it from here (it’s a direct download link from amazonaws). It installed and launched with Wine 11, but I don’t know if it works beyond that. After installing it, make sure you go to Tools -> Options, and deselect the setting for automatic update.

If that app works, use it to download your books, locate them on disk and then drag them (only the actual books files) to your Calibre library. If things went right, it should automatically remove the DRM. Confirm that by converting the books to some other format, such as EPUB.

There’s a thing called Epubor, but stay away from it. It’s rubbish.

EDIT: Re-worded one of the paragraphs.
