I always thought they were directed by George Lucas.
Empire was Kirchner which is why it’s considered the best.
Star Wars was way closer to Golden Age Hollywood producer-driven production then then-current New Hollywood director is in charge approach. Kershner was literally doing the directing while Lucas was doing everything else that enabled directing - so there’s a lot of fluidity and collaboration. Kershner was more assertive as director and that’s why the movie has much more distinct identity compared to Return of the Jedi that often blends together and has Lucas dominating over Marquand (although it should be noted that ROTJ most emotionally powerful moments probably come from Marquand and his direction).
