I think it depends on the context, if it was the only pub in a small village, you’d want it to be inclusive as possible. However, in a big city like London, there are lots of pubs, and if one isn’t child-friendly, there’s plenty of others that are, and vice versa.
I really don’t think it should be controversial for a drinking establishment to choose to be child free. Often they aren’t suitable for kids anyway.
