Awesome stuff.
What a badass artist Cobb was.
And versatile too - he could do fantasy and sci fi and make it look easy despite his stuff being jampacked with classic art and architecture references - you can feel history, culture and traditions breathing through these structures and clothes and faces
I’ve been wondering, for a while now, in the past, we had Ron Cobb, Syd Mead, Ralph McQuarrie, Mobius (my spelling might be wrong), and others like them. What present-day artists should I pay attention to, who are visual “futurists” like these masters?
From the top of my head so it is probably not exactly present day but some of my faves - Simon Stalenhag is currently my favorite sci fi artist - perfect mix of grounded within reach and out there, Jim Burns - one of the OGs but needs more love, John Harris is modern classic all-around, Michael Whelan is more fantasy but he has some astounding cosmic horror stuff, Sparth (the guy who did OG Assassin’s Creed and Prince of Persia biomech monster stuff - he should make some Xenomorphs ASAP), Daniel Zezelj if you’re into cyberpunk grime aesthetic (fun fact - I did a comic with him for World War 3 Illustrated last year), Mike Huddleston got some cool stuff, Daniel Simon is like modern Syd Mead, Allen Reis got Moebius vibes, Paul Chadeisson is another great one on the come up - he did stuff for Blade Runner and Dune.
