I went as him one year for Halloween. Almost no one got it but it was infinitely worth it for the one guy in the bar who came out of nowhere to drop a “I heard you were dead!”
Escape from NY (and LA too) was the most popular at my old film club. Kurt Russell is very beloved down here. And I mean it - folks demanded to show 3000 miles from Graceland level of beloved.
Makes sense, that guy is a damned legend! So many ridiculously good movies to his name.
Escape from NY is amazing. I only saw Escape from LA in theatres and was pretty disapointed even as a kid but I’ve heard people say it’s actually pretty good and like a lot of Carpenter’s stuff, people didn’t get what he was going for…
Escape from LA is wacky and pissed off which is an odd combination but it makes a good movie. Think of it like this - there’s this Spike Lee movie called 25th Hour and the Edward Norton character has 5 minutes of hate speech - so this movie is John Carpenter motherfucking everything he hates about Hollywood and American culture in general - pretty much everything you see is some kind of “fuck you”. On the other hand, this movie feels like lost Metal Gear Solid 2 adaptation at times - chances are Kojima’s MGS2 rethread was inspired by EFLA
Yeah, I’ve sort of heard this is a big fuck you from Carpenter, which flew way overy pre-teenage head.
I’ve got a couple weeks of involuntary sitting around coming up (minor surgery) and I think a basically “new to me” Carpenter would hit the spot quite nicely, I’ll have to get this ready. (And one of the awesome Orson Welles I think you told me about!)
You should try watching Howard Hawks and John Carpenter movies back to back. He was a major influence on Carpenter and his directorial MO is all over Carpenter movies.

(Obviously bought that fine fellow a beer.)
