It’s absurdist comedy, the joke is cows don’t have opposable thumbs so can’t use tools, let alone make them. There are other opposable thumb jokes in the world too, it’s almost a subgenre of “animals struggling with human things.”
I tell you farside has way more leeway to do this sort of comedy, because it’s such a short strip so you haven’t invested much attention span given the relatively high rate of pay offs per comic.
Personally if a comic has a certain amount of text to read I often won’t gamble on it, I’ll skip it. The attention economy predates the Internet if you ask me.
