I have the honor of living a very short distance from the USA’s first Superfund site and the reason the EPA exists! The official name is “Tar Creek”, look it up, it’ll rustle your jimmies.
I can’t remember what its like to live with un-rustled jimmies
Me neither, friend.

Tar Creek Superfund site is a United States Superfund site, declared in 1983
I cannot find an exact date, but it is possible this story line is referencing Tar Creek.
Edit: nope, it probably is this in Chicago
Dow Plant Pollutes River, EPA Says
March 31, 1983
CHICAGO
– Potentially dangerous levels of dioxin are being released into Michigan’s Tittabawassee River in waste water from a Dow Chemical Co. plant, the Environmental Protection Agency concluded in a preliminary report released yesterday.
“This is going to become the ticking bomb for human beings if it is accumulated over years and years,” EPA Region 5 Administrator Valdas Adamkus told a news conference.
I have to drive through it whenever I drive south. There aren’t enough cabin air filters in the world…
“Tar Creek”, look it up, it’ll rustle your jimmies.
Yikes, after reading about a lot of shizzle like that over the years, I have a feeling I know how awful that was.
the reason the EPA exists
Btw, I seem to recall that it was mounting pollution across the States, plus efforts by activists like Ralph Nader that also contributed to the EPA’s formation, despite a right-wing scoundrel being a POTUS at the time.
Did anyone else read this in Stan and Oliver’s voices?
I’m a little rusty on Ollie, but Stan came right back to me.
And wow, I had no idea Breathed did caricatures like these. I kinda thought only Dave Sim was doing such, those days.
Here is the Laurel and Hardy playlist I posted yesterday if you care to refresh yourself. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Jtjo3UtL7E&list=PLWBIfM8GFnXAzlhbET-mlvaM1xoQWSGxn
I plan to watch as much of it as I can today while working on my Addams Family post.
Hmm, I’ll be sure to look for that, as it sounds interesting.
I’m watching the first one so far, “Busy Bodies,” and am immediately reminded that in the late 50’s, Chrysler (led by one particular engineer) actually did produce record players for cars, including the necessary tech to shockproof road bumps.
But more appropriately, I was refreshed in the way that Stan and Ollie could bumble themselves in to all kinds of personal accidents (usually with Ollie the victim), but unlike the Stooges, retaliated minimally against each other, with their friendship almost always surviving the test. Compare that to the Stooges, where almost everything that goes wrong is met with a dangerous personal attack (usually led by Moe).
Contrary to how I felt as a kid, that doesn’t play well with me at all, and makes the show almost unwatchable to me now. So yeah… I wish I’d watched more L&H when I was a kid, and fascinated by the old-timey flicks.
(oops, accidental editorial there)
The public library in my town used to do Laurel And Hardy screenings when I was a kid. It was my second favorite part of summer, with free pool days taking the number 1 spot.
Mary to Badim: I think the Ministry needs a black wing.
