I was device and IP banned for saying Americans needed to have the Guillotines in the streets.

I stand by what I said lol.

You can still use RiF through unofficial patches. I do. I’m here because the bots and hidden account history is just too much to know if I’m even talking to a real person anymore.

I still have a reddit account, but I mostly only use it to look at video game development stuff, and even that is getting less useful with all the AI slop out there.

Bottom left. I was curious. Also I thought maybe, just maybe europe.pub would not be 90% posts about USA and Trump. How naive I was! Turns out I just found a second reddit, and it’s occasionally good!

Trump threatened greenland, had all the tech bros at his inauguration and one of them was high on ketamine and heiling, so I figured it was time to leave as many American social media platforms as possible.

The only one I still use is youtube and that’s in a logged out state and in a browser.

Can’t say I miss Facebook, Instagram and reddit. It’s been over a year and I barely think about it nowadays.

I have my issues with Lemmy, but you can filter out most of the bs so at this point it’s mostly memes, animal photography and other wholesome stuff that’s left in my feed. Life is good.

Tbf, the fediverse isn’t private at all and holds no pretense that it is. Yeah your instance isn’t selling your data or doing the creepy profile-mapping that meta does, but it’s important to be aware that this is very much a public forum

      Middle left.

Also, the fediverse is, in some ways, worse for privacy because of the types of information that need to be shared for federation to work.

Middle left specifically mentions reddit, I’m not here because of anything to do with reddit. I’m here because I prefer open source platforms that preserve more privacy than proprietary ones that will eventually start asking for gov’t ID.

The 3rd party app-ocalypse made me create an account here but it was the reddit ads that eventually made me quit the Reddit app. At some point I realised more of my feed was taken up by autoplay video ads than actual content. The slow decline in intelligent conversations really accelerated after they killed the apps too.

So far I like it here, there’s less content and that can be a bit disappointing but it’s probably healthier that I can’t scroll endlessly. It’s also nice to feel like your posts don’t get buried under a torrent of other content the moment you make them.

I dont know if it’s bots or culture or whatever but the comments on reddit just slid into repetitive blither over a handful of years. This is the internet so I dont expect all interactions to be thought-provoking prose, but I do expect people to at least have their own thoughts. Here on Lemmy, for example, I can find that good ol’ home grown, individualistic blither. Just the way the internet intended.

I agree about the content and really think that it is healthier this way, too. But I also think that the content here is somehow less negative. And as you say, posts do not get buried. I am way more engaged here because of that and had a lot more interactions.

Thats technically the first box, when Reddit walled off their API to third party vendors all the good apps were killed… kinda. I’m still using Boost, they use to proxy for Reddit but now they implemented Lemmy for the past 4 years.

You don’t have one for “Longtime lurker who used reddit for their daily dose of catching-up-with-the-world but found that the r/all was increasingly showing reality tv discussion subs that they had no interest in”.

It’s been three years so I can’t remember, but does reddit not have a way to block certain subs from r/all (at a user level)?

A key part of shaping your lemmy experience is that you can just block any community you aren’t interested in, while still getting the benefits of an All feed.

I used to rarely, if ever, actually log in to my reddit account. Reddit used to have a good set of defaults and I had a list of my favourites in my head. Then I started using RES to block some of the subreddits I did not want to see. Eventually, it got so bad that maintaining the RES blocklist became a hassle. Lemmy has much better defaults and this time I’m actually making an effort to engage with people.

Ah right, RES, plus all the apps had their own options. Man, I bit killing third party apps really cut the features for people.
