“Harry Potter has been a beloved part of so many of our guests’ lives for decades and we couldn’’t be more excited for Canadians to discover the wizarding world at Tims restaurants,” Hope Bagozzi, Tim Hortons’ chief marketing officer, said in a press release Monday.
So to be clear: the discount Canadian coffee chain where I get my daily slurry of caffeine, cream and sugar syrup alongside a tragic-looking sour-cream-glazed donut and whatever a protein bagel is … is apparently going to become the place to “discover the wizarding world” of an almost three-decade-old book series by a British author who has since pivoted to campaigning against the human rights of trans people.
No one wants this. Even the people who haven’t given up Harry Potter in the way that I have, the ones who stretch every day to justify their continued interaction with Rowling—none of them were banging down Tim Hortons’ door specifically to demand this of all collaborations. The world doesn’t need a Gryffindor donut mass-produced by a Canadian coffee chain.
The journalist nailed it; No one wants this. No one asked for this.
I’m a millenial who grew up with Harry Potter. I have disposable income. I would probably be their prime demographic. I don’t want this.
Just this morning I was thinking about all the ridiculous brand collaborations I’ve been seeing lately. It’s non-stop, and it’s exhausting. Brands must be desperate to get our money.
I’m a millenial who grew up with Harry Potter.
Same. I remember seeing the first Harry Potter movie in theaters with my friends and trying to guess who the half blood prince was before that book came out.
It’s pretty surreal that I now have to choose between real human lives and wizard fiction, but I’m choosing the human lives.
