  • Hmm… this is common in action games and soulslikes, I think: Arkham in Devil May Cry 3 and Centipede Demon in Dark Souls come to mind. Those fights are all about positioning.

I feel as if this is a common solution to large boss fights in most games with melee combat; whereas humanoid enemies can typically either quickly turn, do sweeping 360 attacks, or teleport behind you (oh hi Vergil) so it’s less about positioning and more about pattern recognition and quick reflexes.

That said, it’s possible I misunderstood what you mean because I haven’t played older MH games or Xenoblade.

  • Devil May Cry 3.

Yeah, I still don’t like this game. It’s more fun than its predecessors mainly because you can launch and air juggle enemies or do more cool shit like skateboarding or Crazy Dance, but there’s too many humanoid enemies you can’t launch and the absence of an on-the-fly style switcher is very restrictive.

My aim was to judge it for what it is, so I won’t mod the style switcher in this time. I do think they should release the Switch version on PC though.

I will give it this: when you can combo, you can pull off pretty cool shit, but I want a fun action game, not a combo simulator.

I won’t say it’s overrated, but I will say I’d rather play 4 or 5 because I find them more fun.

I don’t particularly love the floaty, sloppy “just put some damage in this 180 degree arc” basis of the combat system much.

I’m not sure what this means, to be totally honest.

I am also not at all on board with most of the early teenage edgelord narrative stuff in there. Maybe I was a bit too old by the time these came out.

I don’t care what anyone says, narratives in character action games are shit 😂 I’m never gonna defend it, and always find it odd that people cared about their stories. They’re not good vehicles for storytelling, IMO.

There’s a reason GoW (2018) had to change genre to shift focus to storytelling, for example.

I would much rather spend time in the more expressive, free-flowing Devil May Cry side of things if I’m going for snappy, precise combat

Hmm… this makes me wonder how much time you spent playing around with GoW3’s combat system because it clearly takes a lot of inspiration from DMC.

  • Combat peaked in GoW3 and it’s definitely the best western action game, IMO. OG trilogy badly needs a remaster and PC port, which I read is in the works, so that’s good.

I liked the freedom of expression GoW3 gave me. Like, you get one opening and you can fuck up the enemy in all sorts of ways in true action game spirit. Really good stuff and more western action games should’ve followed suit.
