The decision is a major boon for affordable Chinese automakers like BYD that are steadily gaining ground in the European market.
I always thought that Europe would be all over the EVs and would quickly build the infrastructure, help replace any other engines, and invest into battery research.

The number of articles talking about BYD destroying the European market are way too high. The truth is that the Volkswagen group is leading BEV sales in Europe and especially Germany. The only non German brand in the top five brands is Skoda and they are owned by the Volkswagen Group. Q4 2025 Tesla was at 2.8% market share and BYD at 2.5% of BEV sales.
Germany is also the second largest producers of BEVs globally passing the US this year. There are also some massive investments into batteries going on. Other European countries are doing similar things.
So this money is going to end up mostly with German car makers anyway.
Because buyers don’t have a choice.
I wish I could buy a small €10k sodium battery EV.
But the only option even remotely close is Dacia Spring, which has bad crash safety, and still over the budget.
So you either go with expensive car, which will be under VW umbrella since they make most of the cars sold here, or pay the same amount thanks to tariffs for chinese brand.
VW has Europe by the balls, and I’m not happy about it. And I have a VW car.
People who hype Chinese EVs need to own one for 5 years and try to get one fixed. Yes, they look like cars, but only reality will tell us if they will last and frankly, given the frequency of new models, it’s all CAD to customer with no durability testing. But, that’s been German cars for the last 20 years…
There are BYD T3 vans used in Singapore that are around 5 years old.
