People assume I can’t speak Chinese because I’m a white American. They are correct.

Invalid comparison. It would be more like you being born and raised in China and people defaulting to English all the time.

It was a joke, not a real comparison. I just happen to not be able to speak any other language.

The ‘it’s just a joke’ defence doesn’t really work when the context it’s posted in changes its meaning entirely.

There’s no defense here. You didn’t get the joke, that’s okay, move on.

I understood it was a joke. I was commenting on how it lands in context, not missing the humor. We’re just reading it differently.

I mean, sure, but I think it’s understandable that they assume that. Not many white Welsh people speak welsh, let alone POC. Surely you can just speak Welsh at them and surprise and delight them?

I feel like this attitude is bigoted in more than one way:

    • it’s anti-POC for obvious reasons
    • it’s anti-Welsh because it implicitly assumes nobody who isn’t ethnically Welsh would have a reason to learn the language (because it’s dying or whatever).

Actress Mali Ann Rees said inclusivity was key to encouraging more people to speak Welsh, with “no excuse” for unconscious bias.

There’s a huge irony here for me. I called out such unconscious bias once, which was actually perpetrated by a black Welsh speaker against an Asian from South Wales. She called me a racist for calling her out! And Reddit being Reddit, she was then upvoted and I down

I won’t forget that. It still intensely annoys me. So thanks Mali for taking my side here.

Doesn’t seem like an unreasonable assumption, Wales is mostly white and almost all white outside of Cardiff, Swansea, and maybe Newport and Wrexham. And I have heard they only push it in schools to the west of Caerdydd
