I mean Putin and earlier the Soviets did this (all the time), I bet putin lured trump with it, knowing it won’t work, and trump is all into it, because he’s a narcissist moron basically.

The US wanted Quebec specifically to remove their French language mandates on streaming content, and Canada in general to remove Canadian content requirements for same. This is about Netflix trying to cut their costs.

Source? Not challenging you, just want more information.

I’m sure Canadian requirements the reason almost all my DVDs have at least French subtitles; even though Spanish is more spoken here in the US, I often see only French as a second language option.

From what I’ve seen, streaming originals come in an insane amount of languages, and French is one of the larger languages. So the only way Netflix is saving money is if Canada is mandating Quebecois dubs or–and I think this is most likely–Netflix doesn’t want to pay for French dubs of third-party content that it streams.

Because I’ve noticed that even shows with global reach and multiple language dubs, like Avatar: The Last Airbender (Nickelodeon cartoon), are only available as monolingual on Netflix, and I’ve VPNd around; so I’m guessing there’s an extra cost for the rights to stream other languages on third party content.

It looks like the two issues are algorithm promotion and support for Canadian content on the production side.

I honestly feel kind of bad for Netflix. They’re just a stupid greedy corporation and I guarantee you that they are unhappy to be at the center of an international trade war and now face of American cultural-imperialist hegemony in Canada. They are going to lose subscribers because Trump is a fucking moron.

And, all in all, Netflix has been pretty good about importing global content to the US; I don’t know how satisfying a villain they can play in this drama.

    https://www.theglobeandmail.com/politics/article-ottawa-rejected-drop-cancon-us-demand-streaming-services/

"Ottawa’s negotiators rejected an 11th-hour demand from the Trump administration to ditch requirements that U.S. streaming platforms, including Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, promote Canadian film, TV and music to their users in Canada.

On Friday evening, the U.S. negotiating team introduced an unexpected demand that Canada provide exemptions to its laws requiring big U.S. streamers to boost the discoverability of Canadian content, including French-language content, in this country, according to a senior government source."

So not artificially boosting Canadian and French content is the same as destroying Canadian culture and identity?

The CRTC mandates a certain % of all content available in Canada is Canadian produced content. We will not change this rule for Netflix or any other American oligarch. They can get fucked.

It also ensures people in Quebec can see content aimed at them, for example.

US is 400M people, Quebec is about 7M. If the algorithmn was not adjusted for Quebec-aimed series they would never be able to find their content. It would always just be Stranger Things for everyone, always.

Companies have to operate according to the laws of the lands in which they operate.

Netflux can go fuck in general, but foreign companies not wanting to be forced to subsidize your TV shows isn’t quite Native boarding schools level of attempt at cultural erasure. Get off the cross, we need the wood.

I highly highly doubt streaming companies no longer bumping Letterkenny and Vikings to the top 5 is what torpedoed the trade deal, but politicians clutching pearls, banging the nationalism drum, and crying attack on National Identity plays better than a dry “we couldn’t get the percentages right on potash, lumber, and soybeans”.

Silliness of politician’s posturing aside, this whole trade war is an exercise in Trumpist ego-stroking retardation, I wish you all luck, and us all a return to sanity.

You get it! Certain other countries don’t feel the need to enforce their TV shows via government mandate, and just let the product speak for itself ;-)

Those are the rules in Canada and have been for decades. If US streamers want access to Canadian markets, they get to follow Canadian rules. It’s like Americans can’t fathom a government actually enforcing regulations because the free market brain rot is too strong. Yes, our government actually attempts to defend our domestic industries. No, we won’t make an exception for you.

Of all the arguments to make against the US, criticizing them for not doing enough to protect domestic industry is an odd one. Especially since thats what all these tariffs are about at the end of the day.

For the record I think these tariffs are dumb and im dismayed at the damage they have done to America’s partnerships around the world. But theres no moral high ground between Canada protecting their domestic industries with preferential treatment requirements and America protecting their domestic industries with tariffs.

Sorry, do you actually think those tariffs are designed to protect American industry? You grow domestic industries over the course of decades with careful, methodical growth. You can’t stand up an aluminum plant in 6 months. Canceling and reapplying tariffs every 3 weeks isn’t going to encourage anybody to invest significant capex based on an inconsistent trade policy.

So neither side has released the details of the trade talks before the talks blew up. But PM Carney, who is not known for bluster or hyperbole, was asked why he was using language that made it sound like Canada is at war, his response was Canada was being attacked.

This comment goes over what was actually said by PM Carney in more detail.

              https://lemmy.ca/post/69821117/25005223

Based on how Trump has treated Canada for the last 2 years and based on how talks broke down entirely, I’m inclined to believe the PM and his negotiators.
