Those are the rules in Canada and have been for decades. If US streamers want access to Canadian markets, they get to follow Canadian rules. It’s like Americans can’t fathom a government actually enforcing regulations because the free market brain rot is too strong. Yes, our government actually attempts to defend our domestic industries. No, we won’t make an exception for you.
Of all the arguments to make against the US, criticizing them for not doing enough to protect domestic industry is an odd one. Especially since thats what all these tariffs are about at the end of the day.
For the record I think these tariffs are dumb and im dismayed at the damage they have done to America’s partnerships around the world. But theres no moral high ground between Canada protecting their domestic industries with preferential treatment requirements and America protecting their domestic industries with tariffs.
Sorry, do you actually think those tariffs are designed to protect American industry? You grow domestic industries over the course of decades with careful, methodical growth. You can’t stand up an aluminum plant in 6 months. Canceling and reapplying tariffs every 3 weeks isn’t going to encourage anybody to invest significant capex based on an inconsistent trade policy.
I didnt say it would work- you’re right that they will likely be removed before much long-term investment is made. But tarrifs are absolutely designed to protect American industry. America became a manufacturing powerhouse after tarrifs on european goods were imposed in the 1800s.
