    There’s a need to define which stage of society you’re thinking about. A socialist revolution would still require lots of labor that can’t be automated right now (“All of these things will take a lot of work and need many competent, educated people working many hours a week to accomplish” from OP).

    You’re talking about a further stage with “future in which automation has rendered large portions of the workforce obsolete”, closer to fully automated luxury. I agree that that’s the goal, but we’re not there yet and it will still take a massive amount of work to get there. We need a vision that points the way to that future and encourages everyone to work towards it. Right now the only popular narrative sort of talking about that is coming from Musk and is self-serving capitalist propaganda.

    UBI is a hack that works in the system we have today. We should all be benefiting from automation and AI and working fewer hours today instead of letting that accumulate upwards, and UBI can help with that. UBI isn’t necessary in a utopia though because there’s no money for an income in the first place.
